10 Painless Ways to Get Healthier RIGHT NOW

Does Healthy need to take SO MUCH effort?

It struck me today that we are nearly half way through 2016. HALF WAY. I know we all say this all the time, but wasn’t New Years like, 2 weeks ago? And now I’ve planted flowers already? O my.

I’ve never been huge on resolutions, so I don’t usually feel like I’ve failed at anything by June. But THIS year I really, desperately, wanted to have at least achieved ten push-ups (even girly push ups, whatever, progress is progress) by now. But I still can’t do one. Not even ONE! I’d say it’s not for lack of trying, except that if I’m honest, (more…)

Making sleep a priority

Sleep and I have always had a very complicated relationship. But then again, don’t most of us struggle with sleep from time to time? Oh we want it. But we don’t always know how to get it. Or we know how, but life is a little crazy and we put it on the back burner.

Lately, I sit at my keyboard late into the night (staring at that evil blue screen) and write about making choices that improve your life while completely disregarding the fact that I should be SLEEPING because sleep is SO important to a healthy, happy life.

What a total contradiction I can be. (more…)

Swedish Bitters – Our Favorite Remedy for Everything

What is Swedish Bitters?

I’m really surprised by the lack of info online regarding Swedish Bitters! Sure, some exists, but I can’t find many really in-depth articles about the stuff. I have NO IDEA why… in my family we’ve been using it for years and years, and we swear by it. It’s almost magic.

Swedish Bitters (or Swedenbitters as it’s sometimes called) is a traditional herbal tonic, made by soaking a mixture of herbs in alcohol for a minimum of a week. It’s recipe varies slightly depending on which country or company you’re getting it from. It has German roots and very strong historical ties with Austria and Sweden. Sometimes called the “elixir of long life”, my grandma used to tell me that the guy who invented it was killed at 102 (more…)

Why We Went Grain Free / Gluten Free

Why We Went Grain Free / Gluten Free

My reluctant shuffle to the grain-free side

I have to confess. I said over and over that we wouldn’t be jumping on the gluten-free, grain-free, generally paleo bandwagon.
Life has such a way of making me eat my words.

I think I always believed that grains weren’t great for a person. I sort of thought of them like iceberg lettuce. Ok to eat, but not necessarily overly nutritious. I just couldn’t get my head around the idea that everyone, suddenly, was allergic to gluten. When my husband started mentioning stomach aches (and taking long naps every evening because he was so tired), I think I actually told him he was ridiculous – that his stomach couldn’t hurt every day. While not everyone will agree with me, I really believe that the “western diet” is one that requires supplementing with vitamins, minerals, and other healing / health encouraging foods. It’s pretty rare that we get ALL the nutrition our bodies require from our food alone; I know I certainly don’t! I try – but I don’t succeed at eating exactly the way I should.

My supplements spending is pretty high – my health is a top priority for me, and I know I feel so much better when I treat my body well. I figure if I feel good, I enjoy life more and therefore the spending is pretty well justified! BUT I don’t actually have a money tree, so I’m always after ways to trim my costs (who isn’t?). What is Kefir?

If you’re looking into how to make kefir at home, there’s a good chance you already know a little of it’s history. Feel free to skip ahead here! For those that don’t know, kefir is a fermented drink, usually made from milk, and full of probiotics. (Probiotics are the healthy bacteria that live in your gut. They are imperative for good health, and if you’ve taken antibiotics in your lifetime there’s a chance that your body has fewer probiotics than it should. Antibiotics – while great for ridding us from infection – can’t distinguish between good and bad bacteria. They kill off your good bacteria too. For more information on probiotics and gut health see this article from Dr. Axe. (more…)
