15 Ways to Have a Budget Hawaii Vacation

Hawaii CAN be a budget destination!

I never, ever, thought of Hawaii as a budget destination. Especially with the current weak Canadian dollar. But we chose Hawaii last year as our budget vacation spot, and for the same reason we chose it again this year! Hawaii did NOT disappoint. We spent under $3000 Canadian dollars total each time we went, for 10 days. That’s less $1500 per person!

It goes without saying that the first step to saving money on a holiday is to get the cheapest flight you can. Use ITA Matrix (read here all about what that is!) or Skyscanner to get the cheapest flight. (I think you should do that for any holiday though, we recently saved $500 on flights to London at Christmas!)

Hawaii has a few extra awesome options for cheapness that some other beach destinations don’t have – use these to your advantage and save save save!  (more…)

How to Find the Cheapest Flight: ITA Matrix

ITA Matrix – google’s magic flight finding software. If you’ve never used it before, your whole budget travel world is about to be rocked. (Or your flashy travel world, if that’s how you like to go!)

Now, you can totally find the same flights other places online. But you have to know exactly what you’re looking for if you wanna search those other places. With ITA matrix you can have a very specific, or slightly vague, or even totally fuzzy idea of what you’re looking for. THAT’s what’s amazing about it. ITA Matrix takes the hard work of the 1st principle of planning a budget holiday – which is BE FLEXIBLE.

You can be as flexible as you want, but ain’t nobody got time for individually searching all the possible combinations of departure and arrival airports on all the possible dates. Not to mention keeping all that information organized and current once you’re searching. ITA Matrix can do all of that in one search. Seriously.

Our most recent budget holiday

In April last year, G and I spent 8 days in Hawaii for $2995.31 – all in. Oh did I mention that’s 2995.31 CANADIAN dollars – So more like $2000.00 (at the time) American? I love love love making travel happen cheap. For me, a big part of living with intention is taking the time to enjoy life, but also being aware that I can’t blow all our savings on one trip. This is where the budget holiday comes in!

I thought today I would share my 5 easy rules for booking a holiday on the cheap, and show you how I applied them to our Hawaii trip. Read on to see how we did Hawaii for less than $3000.00 – with no miles or points of any kind… it was good planning, pure and simple. (more…)

What is Travel Hacking?

Travel Hacking is becoming such a popular phrase. Especially in the budget travel world. I get it – I mean, who doesn’t want to travel for FREE? And possibly travel in style for free?

On the off chance that it’s a new to you phrase, Travel Hacking is the (refined) art of using credit card rewards and membership point programs to travel for FREE. It is legal. It works. It can be complicated.

There are entire websites dedicated to helping you master the art of the travel hack. (more…)

How We Flew to London for $778.00 (Return) Over Christmas

Yes, LONDON at CHRISTMAS for $778.00 (CAN) return

This one’ll be short and sweet – especially sweet if you’re hunting for a cheap flight for your next holiday. I’m always raving about how ITA matrix and Skyscanner can get you to where you’re going cheaper than ever before… and I just want to give you guys a quick example – it occurred to me I’ve never told you about how we flew to London last year over Christmas for $778.00 return.

AT CHRISTMAS. My husband is originally from England, and we (try to) go every other Christmas to stay with his family and catch up with everyone. We have paid as much as $1100.00 per person before, and as little as $900.00, but we have never, ever, gone over the holidays for less than $800.00 per person. (Sometimes in the off season you can get flights for $700.00.)

How’d we do it?

But ITA matrix and Skyscanner have changed all that for us. It wasn’t even hard. First I searched on ITA Matrix for flights from all airports in our area to all airports within 500 miles of London, and I made the departure and return windows as wide as I could. (For example, leaving anywhere between Dec 7 and Dec 12, Returning anywhere between Dec 28 and Jan 2).

And ITA Matrix came back with flights to Copenhagen from Edmonton for $660.00 return.  (more…)
