Does my favorite season have to break the bank?

As much as I love love love Christmas, if I’m not careful it can really take a toll on two things I try hard to protect. My health and my bank account.

I always used to leave the Christmas season with a few extra pounds (and bad skin) and a few less dollars… and I know I’m not the only one.

When I was about 22 I figured out the secret to staying healthy and NOT gaining weight at Christmas (but that’s a story for another post)… it took me a little more time to take control of my Christmas spending.

But I think I’ve finally got it. No longer does Christmas make me cringe with the thought of how on earth we are ever going to justify the extra $1000+ we are gonna drop over the course of the month… because we have learned how to have a frugal Christmas (that’s still awesome.) (more…)

6 Habits of People Who STAY Debt Free

I’ve mentioned before that we are debt free. We decided early in our marriage that we would STAY debt free (not including a mortgage. Some day we will have a mortgage, if the timing is right.)

The decisions we made that helped us to stay debt free from the beginning were hard decisions. We lived with my parents for two years, we saved the money it required to build our home. Then we actually BUILT our home. With our own hands. It’s not a big home. We have never owned an awesome new car. (Although I do own an awesome second hand car now! Well, actually it’s third hand, but it’s like pure luxury compared to the one I drove for the last 6 years.) (more…)

If you’ve read this blog for a while, you know that I don’t fully trust coupons.

If you’re new here – HI! Thanks for stopping by. And you should know that I don’t fully trust coupons.

I know, I know, coupons are literally like money… unless you weren’t ever going to buy that thing in the first place. “Save 50 cents on (specific) shampoo” is not the same as finding two quarters on the ground. If the coupon sways you to purchase something you weren’t already planning on buying… well, that can be bad. That’s what coupons are designed to do, by the way. Sway you. (more…)

It’s pretty darn hard to love life when you feel crappy

(Even if you have an otherwise great life, yes?)

So it makes perfect sense that we would take drastic steps to improve our health any way we can… including spending heaps of cash on expensive products that seem to be promising the solutions to our problems.

According to this article on abcnews.com, Americans spend TWENTY BILLION dollars per year on weight loss drugs, diet programs and surgeries. TWENTY BILLION. And that’s just the weight loss industry. That number doesn’t even take into account the money spent on things like pain management, sleep issues, digestive disorders, skin problems or any multitude of other health issues we struggle with.

The issue is that these problems are real. They aren’t in our heads. We can’t wish them away. Our health truly DOES affect the quality of our lives. So it seems justified to spend our money on the things that could offer relief from our health problems. (more…)

Anyone else watch the Big Bang Theory?

I looooooove The Bang Theory. They finally made a TV show that can compete with Friends as far as I’m concerned. (I very much just dated myself didn’t I?) Anyhow, I was watching Big Bang re-runs the other night, the one where Sheldon (who we know has “extra” money, by the way, despite being a poorly paid physicist) goes shopping with Penny and tells her she should be purchasing her tampons in bulk to save money.

Penny is terribly offended for some reason. Perhaps it’s the discussion about her cycle in general, but as I listened to their conversation I paid attention to my thoughts (for once).

My thoughts said… “Are there really people out there who don’t buy tampons in bulk?! Or who would find the suggestion to be a bad one?” (more…)

There is a time and place for splurging, and there is a time and place for knowing how to save. The small ways we save can add up to real (big) money over time. Set your inner cheapskate free!

My mom (to this day) washes and reuses her ziplock freezer bags. I don’t actually use that many freezer bags, so I don’t find this to be an absolute necessity… but I will admit to keeping the clean ones (ones that never had meat in them) and letting them hang around for another go. Your inner cheapskate is your buddy… set her free and let her help you save! (more…)
